The wait is finally over. Multiplatinum, chart-topping Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix has officially teamed up with 22-time Grammy Award winning, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band U2 to release 'Fireflies' via Darkroom Records — a monumental crossover moment years in the making.
The track was premiered live for the first time during Garrix’s headlining Tomorrowland set last Friday, alongside a surprise appearance from The Edge on the Mainstage. The collaboration marks the first time all four members of U2 have appeared on a track with Garrix. Built around Bono’s unmistakable vocals, U2’s classic rock foundation and Garrix’s signature production, ‘Fireflies’ is a powerful, arena-scale hybrid unlike anything either camp has released before.
A longtime friendship and creative partnership have brought Martin Garrix and U2 together on multiple occasions. Most recently, Martin produced ‘Scars’, featured on U2’s latest EP, Easter Lily. He also previously collaborated with Bono and The Edge back in 2019 on ‘We Are The People’, which was written as the official song of the UEFA European Football Championship.
On the collaboration, Martin shared: “‘Fireflies’ has a very unique mood and it’s a special song we started working on six summers ago. It felt electrifying and very surreal to finally debut it at Tomorrowland with The Edge. I’ve worked with Bono and Edge before, but working with the whole band I got to get a glimpse of their chemistry and why U2 are who they are. They are incredible friends and collaborators, and it has been an absolute honor to work with them again.”
The Edge echoed those sentiments in his own words: “We go back a long way with Martin, and there’s always a sense of adventure whenever we get together. Playing ‘Fireflies’ for the first time at Tomorrowland, in front of one of the most passionate festival crowds anywhere, was such a rush… in fact I might have enjoyed it a bit too much. It reminded me of why I love playing outdoors. I like it better when there’s no ceiling.”
‘Fireflies’ is the latest release in a string of exciting collaborations from Garrix. Most recently, he teamed up with Madonna on ‘Bizarre’ for her newest album, Confessions II, first premiering the track during his three-night run at Barclays Center in New York. Back in May, Martin also released his long-awaited collab with Ed Sheeran — ‘Repeat It’ — followed by its acoustic version.
Martin Garrix recently wrapped the first leg of his largest and most ambitious headline tour to date — the Martin Garrix Americas Tour. He’ll appear at festivals across Europe for the remainder of the summer, and with ‘Fireflies’ now officially out via Darkroom Records, it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest moments of his career so far.
